State of the art means of transportation...

In the middle of one of the best kept nowheres in the world, a madman once dreamed of building a town.

He failed.

Building towns is one of those things that are hard to do after you've been executed.

Perfect Day @ Birmingham Botanical Gardens

As Lou Reed once put it:

Just a perfect day,
Feed animals in the zoo
Then later, a movie, too,
And then home.

I didn't go to the Zoo on Sunday, nor did I drink sangria in the Park, but I took a trip to the Botanical Gardens, and caught a movie after that, so I had to mention the song :)

Anyway, it was so sunny and warm, that all I felt like doing was photograph flowers. A cheesy set of pics, what can I say, but you know what, I've never actually shot flowers before.

Or fish, for that matter:

And let's not forget about Mr. Peacock, of course, who was roaming free around the garden and really enjoyed being a model.

And I hope he'll like the photos, otherwise I've been warned he might get mad.

Back to my gloomy self from tomorrow on :)

Godiva Unsigned Competition Heat 3 @The Flapper

More about this here.

Enough to say that, except for City Hero - who play something that vaguely resembles Nickelback, and I deeply dislike that American Spiderman-soundtrack kind of rock (I'm sure they didn't mean it, it just came out that way), and The Amateurs - that I've seen before and are not really my cup of tea - I loved all the bands that played:

- Circus Town - a straightforward garage rock band, with bluesy influences, loads of energy and pumping bass lines;
- OST, who call themselves emotronic/trance/psychedelic but are nothing like that, their songs remind me of some oldies from Bloc Party, I Still Remember or Kreutzberg;
- and last, but not least, the cheery ska crowd (literally, they were 9 or 10 on the stage) of Tempting Rosie.

Here they are, in all their rock n'roll glory:

And no, going to a gig at 1 pm on a Sunday is not odd at all. In fact, I liked that between bands I could go out on the terrace and stare at the sun. And eat some junk food. And have a beer. Staring at the sun is really unhealthy, don't you think?

Crystal Antlers & Vinny and the Curse @ The Rainbow

Sensational gig. Crystal Antler's Andrew has comfortably found a shoegazing corner in my playlist since then, and Vinny and the Curse sounded so raw and unpolished - but in a good way, kind of like Velvet Underground meets The Who meets The White Stripes. Or not.

They were just plain cool.

I'm not sure I'm a big fan of the venue, though. It looks like a cave, which in itself is not a bad thing, all my favorite clubs in Bucharest look like caves, but seriously, water on the floor?

I'm not going to say anything about the lighting, you're probably bored of my constant whining on this subject...

...and yet, I can't help myself. The only time I had worse lighting at a gig was at O2 Academy 3. You're wondering why I'm not linking to the pictures? Well, that's how bad it was.

Plus, although it served me faithfully all these years, my poor old 350D can't really cope anymore. I'm in need of new gear.

Now, the photos:

Val & Elena

When people think about a photo studio, the first image that pops into their head is usually that of a sexy model "making love to the camera" Austin Powers-style. That's why every time I ask people to model for me they say: "But I don't know how to do that."

So - meet Val & Elena, my flatmates, not professional models. Working with them was a pleasure and I think they're proof that you don't have to do something or be someone in front of the camera. You just have to enjoy yourself. And not take things too seriously - that's the photographer's job.
